Chapter Eleven

Once she had finished remodeling the living room, cleaning out closets and reorganizing the work van had taken up much of Lily's weekend. But, she'd also slept some and answered e-mails from Hannah and Cat, and she had made herself a gourmet meal. By the time Monday morning rolled around, she felt refreshed and alive and was only hoping that the rest of the gang was too. Mostly she was hoping that Laura had slipped from her melancholy state and was ready to at least be somewhat sociable.

What she encountered was not even close to what she'd been praying for. Sure, Laura had changed her tune—hell, she was nearly euphoric; grinning and handing out Hershey's Kisses the minute she climbed in the van. Humming a little Celtic tune and smiling at each of them, Laura might just have joined the Krishnas or spent her weekend getting laid; whichever it was, Lily was relieved by Laura's shifted attitude—no matter how she came by it. Whatever gets you through the night, Lily thought. She was just happy that everybody was happy. Unfortunately, all that happiness was short-lived. The scene that opened before them, as they approached the B & B, was a circus.

There was a mob (that's how Lily saw it) milling around a small swatch of earth, outside the big house, a bunch of men looking practically stitched together. They stood with disapproving matching furrowed brows and pursed lips all turning toward the van as she swung the truck into the driveway.

“What the fuck is going on?” she asked, confounded, startling the blissful bunch in the back. Dolly leaned forward, squinting, counting and then naming the figures before them.

“Your brother, James, Lil. Your mother, too.” She glanced sideways at Lily as she also worriedly surveyed the scene. The collective breath of her crew was hot on her neck.

“Get back,” she almost yelled, then surveying and running up her own tab on the gathered bystanders. There were the Galway boys, Malcolm and Patrick, Bobby Dean, a cop, and Jeremiah Glock. Glock?!

Lily rolled the van around the bunch, circling like a warrior around a wagon train. Only she didn't feel like the attacker, she felt like a lamb about to be slaughtered.

“Oh boy,” she uttered. “This is not how I was plannin’ to start my day.”

“Where's Arlo?” Laura asked.

“He's probably laying low,” Micah said defensively. “Knowing him, he's smart enough to hang back till the dust clears.”

“Or at least till we got here,” Dolly assured. “He'll show.”

“All right now,” Lily said as she cut the engine. “Everybody, just keep your mouths shut till we find out what's going on, OK?” She glanced back for assenting nods. “Lord knows what this is all about.”

Climbing from the van, she had no time to take more than a few steps before she was surrounded. Voices descended upon her, until she finally reached the cop and pulled him by the sleeve away from the rest.

“Why Jake McCann, I haven't seen you since high school,” Lily said, relieved to know the face behind the badge.
